Headlines - Tuesday

President Barack Obama convenes his first formal Cabinet meeting Monday and will ask department and agency chiefs to look for ways over the next 90 days to cut $100 million out of the federal budget: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/04/20/obama-budget-cuts-will-or_n_188874.html

$100 million seems like chump change. Cutting out the useless Abstinence Only programs alone would save $1.1 billion per year.

Chrysler Financial is on the verge of ruin and they turn down a federal loan because they don't want pay restrictions?

In forgoing the loan, Chrysler Financial opted to use more expensive financing from private banks, adding to the burdens of the already fragile automaker and its financing company.

Fun fact: Obama and his team going with Ford hybrids.

A former head of the CIA slammed President Obama on Sunday for releasing four Bush-era memos, saying the new president has compromised national security.

Perhaps I have been too harsh on Obama and his torture policy. Maybe the strategy is to Let the momentum build for an investigation to the point that they can credibly say: "We had no choice but to launch a criminal investigation."

If that's the case, we all need to pile on.

You can start by signing a petition to Eric Holder to appoint a special prosecutor: http://action.firedoglake.com/page/s/Prosecutor
And/or you can take action by clicking here to urge the House Judiciary Committee to begin impeachment hearings against Jay Bybee:

"I wrote the torture memos!"

Bybee is now a federal judge on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Wingnuts are upset that President Obama shook hands and briefly chatted with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. They are claiming face-to-face talks with a dictator show that Obama is projecting weakness.

Newt Gingrich said Obama "bows to the Saudi King and is friends with Venezuela" and claimed the President showed "shallowness" in talking with Chavez. Gingrich then claimed that U.S. presidents do not "smile and greet" with Russian leaders.

Last week, hate radio host Michael Savage (Weiner), in conjunction with the Thomas More Law Center, filed a lawsuit against Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. They claim DHS has violated the plaintiffs' First and Fifth Amendment rights by "attempting to chill their free speech, expressive association, and equal protection rights." GWU Law Professor Orin Kerr responds:

Isn't the lawsuit frivolous? As I read it, the lawsuit is claiming that the issuance of a government report criticizing certain groups violates the plaintiffs' constitutional rights. But the Constitution doesn't provide a constitutional right to have the government not say things that might be considered criticism. Perhaps the plaintiffs want the Constitution to be radically reinterpreted by activist judges to invent some brand-new constitutional rights?

new study that analyzes data from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, FBI, and the Department of Health and Human Services for all 50 states shows that:

For the first time in 25 years, since the inception of the "war on drugs," the number of African Americans incarcerated in state prisons for drug offenses has declined 21.6% - a decline of 31,000 people during the period 1999-2005.

The study…also documents a corresponding rise in the number of whites in state prison for a drug offense, an increase of 42.6%, or more than 21,000 people. The number of Latinos incarcerated for state drug offenses was virtually unchanged.

"No offense to Middle America, but if someone went to Columbia or Wharton, [even if] their company is a fumbling, mismanaged bank, why should they all of a sudden be paid the same as the guy down the block who delivers restaurant supplies for Sysco out of a huge, shiny truck?" e-mails an irate Citigroup executive to a colleague.

Well, sorry Mr. Citiman, simply saying "No offense" does not mean that to anyone with at least the sensibilities of a chimpanzee, you're not as offensive as a turd in a punchbowl any more than being able to go to some fancy assed school on daddy's dime automatically entitles you to live in the lap of luxury while the people who actually have to WORK for a living are going without basics. I have this feeling there's an Antoinette or two amongst your forebears somewhere.

"I'm not giving to charity this year!" one hedge-fund analyst shouts into the phone, when I ask about Obama's planned tax increases. "When people ask me for money, I tell them, 'If you want me to give you money, send a letter to my senator asking for my taxes to be lowered.' I feel so much less generous right now. If I have to adopt twenty poor families, I want a thank-you note and an update on their lives. At least Sally Struthers gives you an update."

Al Gore is returning to the Hill  on Friday to testify about climate change before a subcommittee of the House Energy and Commerce Committee.  He will be testifying alongside former Senator John Warner in a hearing entitled "Bipartisan Leaders' Views on the ACES Legislation." ACES is the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009, legislation including cap-and-trade provisions as well as renewable energy standards and new "smart grid" technology.  Don't look now, but it sure seems like Obama intends to get something done here.
