White House fears liberal war pressure

White House officials are increasingly worried liberal, anti-war Democrats will demand a premature end to the Afghanistan war before President Barack Obama can show signs of progress in the eight-year conflict, according to senior administration sources.

Accused of murder, illegal arms smuggling, child prostitution, creating a "killing program" with the CIA and being on a crusade to eliminate Muslims, our State Department says Blackwater gets to continue its operations in Iraq - even though it was banned by the Iraqi government earlier this year:

Fun fact: In 2007, Blackwater was charging $1,222 per day for each private military operative — more than six times the wage of an equivalent soldier. And still it was caught overcharging. An audit in 2005 by the State Department's inspector general found Blackwater was charging separately for "drivers" and "security specialists" who were, in fact, the same people.

Stay classy, Ben Stein

Now that he's been drummed off the NY Times editorial pages, I guess Ben Stein can throw restraint to the winds.

We have … an entire party, the Democrats, whose primary constituency, besides the teachers' unions, is homosexual men and lesbian women. I hope it won't come as a surprise to anyone that a big part of male homosexual behavior is interest in young boys.

Why, yes, it will come as a big surprise. There is a range of homosexual behavior (just as there is a range of heterosexual behavior), and among both homo- and heterosexual men, there is a significant minority that are focused on youth. Shall we accuse most heteros of being pedophiles, too?

Besides, I think he confused "homosexual" with "Catholic priest".

Oh, and just for that perfect addition to the above nonsense, here's the beginning of the very next paragraph:

Don't get me wrong. My very best friend is gay.

###

Othering themselves at a furious pace

Why are we supposed to listen to them, include them, worry at all about them?  By "we" I mean liberals, progressives and people who generally consider themselves to be moderate or centrist or some similar term.  By "them" I mean the nation's conservatives - every person who unironically watches/listens to Glenn Beck, Limbaugh, Savage, who thinks Sarah Palin gets a raw deal from the press, who figures Michelle Bachmann has a point about the Census, and so on.

Oh, and the people who think like this:

Regine Gordon doesn't want her 6-year-old son to hear from President Obama next week.

Gordon, of Tampa, Fla., is among a growing number of parents across the country who are troubled by the president's plan to address elementary, middle and high school students in an online speech Tuesday.

"It's a form of indoctrination, and I think, really, it's indicative of the culture that the Obama administration is trying to create," Gordon told FOXNews.com on Thursday. "It's very socialistic."

And this:

But that hasn't assuaged concerns of Michelle Moore of St. Louis, who says she's considering keeping her two daughters out of the classroom at Lindberg High School when Obama begins to speak.

"I have to sign permission slips for my kids to watch R-rated movies in school," Moore said, explaining that she felt parents were being blindsided by the president's address. "It was simply presented, 'Hey, we're going to do this, this is when it's going to air and you're going to show it to your kids.'"

Moore suggested that the speech be issued as a DVD to students so they can view it with their parents at home, adding that the first day of classes for many students will be a harried affair.

"That's their first day," she said. "I would think they have plenty of other things to do."

The idea of having Obama speak directly to children without so much as a permission slip being sent home just "makes you feel a little funny," said Beth Milledge of Winterset, Iowa. She said she plans on going to school with her 8-year-old son to watch the address with him.

See, I read nonsense like that and I immediately start to think in terms of "these people."  I start to consider them more as part of an entirely different species than me instead of just regular ol' Americans.  Because while I wouldn't have been happy at George W. Bush stuttering and stumbling through an address directed at my daughter and the rest of the nation's schoolchildren last year, I also would not have considered for one moment that she should participate in some other activity, or that I should sign a permission slip as if she was going to watch an R-rated movie.

When I was 10 years old, the space shuttle Columbia landed in the New Mexico desert near my hometown.  They gave us the original landing date off from school, and when the shuttle did finally land, they had televisions in the cafeteria for us to watch.  Then they let us out early the next day so we could go look at if if we wanted.  Some things are worth adjusting the school schedule, and the President of the United States specifically addressing schoolchildren is one of those things.

This would be true for me whether that president is Obama or anyone else.  Even if it were Sarah Palin, God help us.  And that's why I titled this post with "othering themselves," because if I've decided that this country's conservatives are so far gone that they should simply be excluded, as much as is possible, from every level of discourse and government, it's not because I'm just a jerk who creates false dichotomies and looks for enemies.  It's because that movement has consciously devolved into an unholy combination of false victimization, constant rage and a concerted effort to destroy their own nation and salt the ruins.  They're so far away from rational thought that they consider an address from the duly elected President of their own country to be an underhanded, illegitimate attempt to brainwash their children into becoming fascist socialistic communists.

The sooner we can convince the ruling party in DC to just ignore them, the faster we can get the USA to catch up with the rest of the developed world.

Texans don't want their children listening to President Obama either:

What are your feelings about the President addressing school children in a speech on September 8th?

I have no problem - 40.6%
Depends on the topic - 17.5%
Wouldn't let my children see it - 42.0%

Fun fact: Ronald Reagan spoke to schoolchildren through the new medium of "television" in the late 1980s and George W. Bush also did this to the schoolchildren in the early 1990s, and yet dumb trash of 2009 are not cognizant of this political trivia, just as they fail to comprehend their own wingnut hypocrisy of claiming it's terrible to see a black president on the teevee because he'll try to slip in some sort of "political policy," even though he's just going to tell the doomed kids that they're much more doomed if they drop out of school, while Reagan and Bush Senior actually tried to brainwash the kids with actual pitches for (of course) tax cuts and education cuts. The Denver Channel/TPM

How long did it take the right to go from: "if you criticize the President you are a traitor" to "School children should not trust the President."

Who's Blocking Health Care Reform Now? Blue Dogs? Senate Dems? House Progressives? Or the White House Itself? http://www.commondreams.org/view/2009/09/03-11

###

Can the health care reform debate be shocked back to sanity?

No one would argue that August has been good for the cause of healthcare reform. There was some momentum on the side of reform in July, but Harry Reid decided that Republicans were right -- we had to wait until September to take up the issue again. Rather than work through the August recess, the Senate would go home to their districts, put on their thinking caps, and give this all some serious thought.

"It's better to have a product based on quality and thoughtfulness rather than try to jam something through,"
Reid said. It was at this point that things took a turn for the stupid. "Quality and thoughtfulness" were a no-show. What we got was lunacy and lies. Republicans decided this would be a good time to lose their damned minds and Blue Dog Democrats decided it would be a good time to pretend to be Republicans. Nothing that's happened over the past five weeks had to happen. But Senate majority leader Harry Reid took his hands off the wheel and the car predictably veered off the road and into the ditch.

The flawlessness of the GOP office holder

Have you ever found yourself in this situation? You're talking with someone about something and it quickly becomes apparent that you're wrong. Not just a little wrong, but wrong about pretty much everything. Maybe you misunderstood some basic point and this was what you thought was the logical foundation of the whole thing. Maybe you got some bad information -- someone told you one thing, while the opposite was true. Maybe you thought you'd figured it out, but the real answer turned out to be counterintuitive. But, for whatever reason, you're about as wrong as it's possible to be.

Normally, you'd just readjust your understanding of what you're talking about. After all, you're human, this sort of thing happens. It's impossible to go through life without getting something all balled up. You just slap your forehead, laugh, and get on with your life.

Unless, of course, you're a Republican. Especially a Republican in elected office. Then you aren't wrong. Ever. Invading Iraq is still the smartest thing anyone's ever done for the cause of freedom, for example. If someone points out the facts -- no WMD, no ties to al Qaeda, no "imminent threat" to the United States -- you just jam your fingers in your ears and shout, "La! La! La! La! I can't hear you! La! La! La! La!" Because it's absolutely impossible for you to be wrong. If there's a disagreement between reality and an elected Republican, reality automatically loses. Every time.

Will Glenn Beck gather the courage needed to accept city's key?

I bet Mayor Norris would be grateful to hear how you support his decision to give Glenn Beck the key to the city. You can contact him at (360) 336-6211 or mvmayor@ci.mount-vernon.wa.us. You might also consider giving the Skagit County Young Democrats a donation so they can busy themselves and not ruin Beck's big day. You can reach them at ydskagitcounty@gmail.com.

Mayor Bud Norris
Mt Vernon, WA

Dear
Mayor Norris,

You're a brave man. Most mayors would shy away from honoring Glenn Beck, a man who claims that nearly 60% of your city's voters cast their ballots for a Nazi. Yes, you have 6,605 constituents who might be angry that the man you are feting says their president is a big, scary Negro who is hell bent on stealing money from white people. It's a big risk you're taking. Your courage is commendable.

But, unfortunately, Glenn Beck is not your match when it comes to bravery. He's a frightened little man, given to exploding into
crying jags in front of millions of people and whining when a trucker ruins his quest for a Wendy's Frosty™.

You might not be able to coax him up onto the stage to receive his key to the city if he spies one of the
192 black or 6,589 hispanic citizens of your city. Beck reacts to melanin as if it's a big hairy spider with huge fangs. He's deathly afraid that darkly-hued-skinned people are plotting to give us all the swine flu.

Of course you could just round up all the blacks and hispanics and hold them until after Beck leaves, but that still leaves as many as 6,605 Obama voters to deal with. Beck calls them
fascists and says they're working with a secret army Obama's mustered to destroy him.

Maybe it's best if no one is present at the ceremony. You could always leave the key to the city under a rock in front of City Hall and let him pick it up himself. He might like that. It'd make him feel like a commando, a great white avenger snatching the keys of white entitlement from its hiding place.

But then again, why give him the key. It's not very useful. It doesn't unlock anything. What he really needs is advertisers. He's
lost a lot of them lately. Maybe you could ask the Skagit Valley Militia to step up as a sponsor. I bet it's cheap. They could probably pay for a years worth of ads with a single batch of meth.

Well, good luck. I think you'll need it.

Heterosexually yours,

Gen. JC Christian, patriot

A 65 year old guy goes to a town hall meeting to protest socialized medicine. He picks a fight with someone who bites his finger off and gets it reattached courtesy of that socialized program called Medicare.

On Wednesday, 11 more companies — including Mercedes-Benz, Capital One, HSBC and Discover announced they were joining the boycott of Glenn Beck's show on the Fox channel.

This brings the number of companies in the ad ban to nearly 60, according to James Rucker, executive director of ColorOfChange.org, the organization behind the sponsor protest. The list includes Applebee's, Bank of America, Bell & Howell, Best Buy, CVS, DirecTv, General Mills, GMAC Financial Services, Kraft, Procter & Gamble, Regions Financial Corporation, SAM (Store and Move), Travelers Insurance, Travelocity, Vonage and Wal-Mart.

The gray wolf hunts are back thanks to Obama continuing the irresponsible Bush environmental policies. What a disappointment and waste of years of recovery efforts by the federal government. After being on the endangered species list for years and wolf populations coming back, it's all gone. Obama sided with the Bush team to allow hunting again. At least Obama can wrap up those critical rancher votes which are so coveted.

###

At least some Dems have some balls. The Progressive Caucus won't vote for a bill without the 'public option' and the Speaker agrees:

In a letter delivered to the White House moments ago, the two leaders of the bloc of House progressives bluntly told President Obama that they will not support any health care plan without a public option in it — and demanded a meeting to inform him face to face.

The Los Angeles Times reported today that the California-based Consumer Watchdog has submitted a letter to Attorney General Jerry Brown calling for an investigation of insurance giants Wellpoint and United HealthCare (UHC). The complaint comes in response to the insurance companies' practice of actively encouraging employees to engage in anti-health care reform political activity. According to Consumer Watchdog, "while coercive communications with employees may be legal, if abhorrent, in most states, California's Labor Code appears to directly prohibit them."

http://thinkprogress.org/2009/09/03/california-consumer/

Also, Brown is launching an independent inquiry into HMOs' handling of health insurance claims.

You see, there are reports that California's five largest health-insurance providers (aka "death panels") are denying insurance claims at rates of up to 39.6 percent.

Who got to Gonzo?

Earlier this week Alberto VO5 shocked everyone by defending Attorney General Eric Holder's investigation into torture. Today, Gonzales is following in Tom Ridge's footsteps and backpedaling. He doesn't endorse an investigation:

"I don't support the investigation by the department because this is a matter that has already been reviewed thoroughly and because I believe that another investigation is going to harm our intelligence gathering capabilities and that's a concern that's shared by career intelligence officials and so for those reasons I respectfully disagree with the decision."

###

Who keeps voting for this man?

Inhofe: "There has never been a case of torture at Guantanamo Bay"

Yesterday, Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-OK) held a town hall meeting with his constituents in Grove, Oklahoma, where he unleashed a tirade of hyperbolic remarks against Obama administration policies. At one point he even suggested that Obama is "obsessed" with releasing terrorists into the United States, and claimed that there has "never been a case of torture" at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp:

He is also alarmed, he said, by the proposed closing of the detention camp at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. The Obama administration wants to shutter the camp because of its association with torture.

Inhofe said: "There has never been a case of torture there. The people there are treated better than in the federal prisons."

He continued, "I don't know why President Obama is obsessed with turning terrorists loose in America."

As the Center for Constitutional Rights has documented, there have been countless cases of detainees being abused and tortured at the prison camp. Detainees have been beaten, deprived of sleep for weeks, sexually harrassed, and shackled to the floor for days at a time. Inhofe's statement at the town hall is only the latest in his political broadsides. He has in the past suggested that Obama is "un-American," that the mentality of Middle Easterners is "worse than Nazism," and that the conditions at Guantanamo Bay are humane.

Obama to (finally) fulfill one of his promises by agreeing to release logs of visitors to the White House.

Journalism is killing America

Five years ago, the traditional media helped Bush pitch a war that got 4,337 service men and women killed in Iraq (to say nothing of the thousands and thousands of Iraqis killed).

Now, traditional media journalism is back to killing Americans, in this case by deliberately misrepresenting public views on health care reform. EJ Dionne describes how at least one network refused to cover civil, informative town halls.
