Hey guys, remember that time when Newt Gingrich lead Congress to repeal the Glass–Steagall Act and we've had Depression-era crashes in the market ever since? Me Neither! Anyway, Newticles is saying that the Dodd-Frank act is killing the banks.

...which is pretty amazing since the law is not fully implemented and the banks are having one of their best years ever. (Think Progress)

Part-time governor and full-time grifter Sarah Palin releases her campaign summer vacation movie! You may recall Mooselini quit her bus tour, restarted it, and quit it again. Now it is being used to raise money for... what, exactly?

###

Liberal activists and union folks are giving GOP lawmakers a hard time at townhalls over the recess. Sound familiar? Yeah, if this is how Republicans want to do politics, this is the way we're going to do politics. It's your bed, GOP. Now lie in it.

4,474 soldiers killed in Iraq; 1,745 in Afghanistan. Not that anyone cares.

We need to have a grown-up discussion about drones before something like this happens in Southern Arizona or California, where we have drones on the border and not just several civilian airports, but more than a few military bases with lots of air traffic. "A collision between a drone and a cargo plane in Afghanistan this week echoed all the way to Washington, revving up a debate on when the unmanned vehicles will soar over American skies. ... The 450-pound remotely-piloted drone-the RQ-7 known as the Shadow- hit a C130 on Monday, destroying the drone, damaging the big jet and forcing an emergency landing. ... Closer to home, they can show the course of a wildfire in the American west or the size of an oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. ... he demand for drones and other airborne gizmos is growing back home, especially as soldiers who had them in their military tool-kit wonder why they don't have the same technology on their civilian jobs. ... "For example you have people lost on skiing expeditions or mountain climbing, these systems are tailor-made to go into very hostile weather conditions, and change the calculus of a situation and by that I mean you're no longer worried about the risk of a guy flying through a snow storm. You use an unmanned system to go, spot people and save lives. And that's really the benefit we provide, saving lives in theater and I think there is an equal benefit state-side as well." ... But while proponents of unmanned aircraft want to see those benefits, they aren't holding their breath. ... McDuffee predicts that the Federal Aviation Administration may approve some drone use by an estimated 2025 deadline, but the technology for unmanned aircraft to detect and evade potential problems needs more work. ... "That is really the heart and soul of the real issue that faces our industry, how do you safely integrate all of this capability into our national airspace so we can start deploying these systems for commercial use - that is the bottom line," McDuffee said."

Remember the Fukushima nuclear meltdown? Cable news has obviously forgotten, but it's still a catastrophic manmade disaster. This, for example:

China has reported that the radioactive contamination in the Pacific Ocean from the Fukushima nuclear power plant is far wider than the areas released by the Japanese government.

China has discovered 100,000 square miles of Pacific Ocean waters, at distances up to 800 kilometers from Fukushima, with Cesium radiation levels up to 300 times normal and Strontium radiation levels up to 100 times normal.

China says a study conducted by its State Oceanic Administration has found widespread levels of highly radioactive contamination throughout Pacific Ocean.

Nothing to see here. Move along.

Today, environmentalists and other activists began civil disobedience in front of the White House. Among the first arrestees were Lt. Dan Choi and FDL's Jane Hamsher. The issue is the Keystone XL pipeline. Read more about it here. The decision on whether to build this environmental disaster rests solely with President Obama. So far, despite repeated campaign promises about climate change, enviros have not gotten much from the Obama administration. So, they have to step up their game to change that. And, if you don't know about the tar sands pipeline, learn about it. If it's built, it will affect all of us. More from Jane here.

Bill McKibben laid out the issue today in a
WaPo op-ed

This one is all Obama. Will it be "Game over" for the climate or will he stand up for all of us, as promised? The pressure is on -- and it will continue for the next ten days in front of the White House

To keep up with this, visit Tar Sands Action.

Remember Governor Rick Scott's genius plan to drug-test welfare recipients?

The term you're looking for is "false economy" "A WFTV investigation found that out of the 40 recipients tested by Department of Central Florida's (DCF) region, only two resulted in positive results. And one of those tests is being appealed. ... Under the rules of the program, the state must reimburse recipients who receive negative test results. The state paid about $1,140 for the 38 negative tests, while saving less than $240 a month by denying benefits over the two positive tests. ... "We have a diminishing amount of returns for our tax dollars," the ACLU's Derek Brett told WFTV. "Do we want our governor throwing our precious tax dollars into a program that has already been proven not to work?" ... The cost to taxpayers could end up being significantly higher because the state expects to have to defend the law in court."

By the way, a large portion of the drug testing will be done by a chain of clinics owned by Governor Scott's wife. Rick Scott transferred ownership to his wife the day before being sworn in as governor.

Wow. This is amazing, and although the article doesn't confirm it, the data must reflect market manipulation or Bernie wouldn't have leaked it

Everyone who finds this the least bit surprising, stand on your head. "Glenn Beck's upcoming rally to "Restore Courage" has run into a snag after House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH) and the House Ethics Committee rejected the request by a number of House members to travel at the expense of the International Israel Allied Caucus Foundation to Beck's rally in Jerusalem. ... But political and religious leaders from "around the world" will be enjoying U.S. taxpayer subsidized -- through non-taxable charitable contributions -- travel to the rally. The travel will be paid for by WallBuilders, an organization founded by David Barton, a pseudo-historian and frequent Glenn Beck guest. Barton has a history of anti-gay and anti-Muslim rhetoric, has spoken at events sponsored by anti-Semitic organizations, and promotes a revisionist history of the U.S. claiming that the "Church-state separation is a liberal myth." ... Beck's partnership with WallBuilders is listed on the rally's front page by clicking the "Donate" button which takes visitors to WallBuilders website. The site accepts contributions to the "Restoring Courage -- Israel" fund."
