A miniature species of extinct humans, nicknamed "hobbits", possessed unusual anatomical features explained by their complete isolation from the rest of humanity for thousands of years on their remote island home in Indonesia, studies have found: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/the-foot-that-may-prove-hobbits-existed-1680405.html

A touching family values moment

Rep. Sheryl J. Briggs
House of Representatives
State of Maine

Dear
Rep. Briggs,

I'm always touched when I'm blessed with an opportunity to witness a good Christian mother providing loving guidance to her daughter. And I'll admit it, I may be an 11 on the manly scale of absolute gender, but the tears were rolling down my face as I saw you share one such intimate moment with your daughter on Tuesday. It isn't often that we are given the gift of observing a mother rebuke a wicked daughter for engaging in acts of sodomy. It's even more rare to witness a mother doing it on the floor of the state legislature in front of cameras. That's an uncommon kind of love, an act of love that few mothers are in a position to share with their daughters. I hope she was there to witness it, and if not, she at least had an opportunity to see it live on the television you keep in the home you share.

But is it enough. Isn't there more you could do to publicly shame your prodigal daughter. Have you considered writing the words "SINFUL WHORE" in bold capital letters on her forehead with a sharpy as she sleeps? Or better yet, have you asked the House Christian caucus to help you exercise the homosex demon from her body--that would make for a great youtube video.

Please consider doing both if you haven't already, and send me a link when you do.

Heterosexually yours in a chaste and biblically appropriate kind of way,

Gen. JC Christian, patriot

While Judge Jay Bybee has declined to speak before the Senate Judiciary Committee to explain his role in the Bush torture program, he is reportedly reaching out to Nevada delegation members to find an alternative forum "to tell his side of the story." Story here.

I'll bet George has a front row seat.

Fun fact: Mormons do not use crosses because they symbolize torture.
The author of the torture memos (Bybee) is a Mormon.

While I first thought this was an item from the Onion, it appears that the Canadian Parliament has voted to mandate that Canadian Olympic athletes should wear wear a seal product — most likely seal skin — as part of their uniforms. This is the response to the opposition by the European Union to the Canadian seal hunt. Story here.

A defense contractor charged with trying to smuggle firearms out of Iraq claimed Blackwater guards asked him to help get rid of weapons after a deadly 2007 shooting in Baghdad, two government informants say in court documents.

The contractor told one of the informants that
Blackwater guards wanted to dispose of the weapons before an investigation into the September 2007 shooting that left several civilians dead.

A funny thing happened on the way to the Tea Party.

The more furiously the party out of power denounces President Obama, the more confident Americans appear to be that voters made a wise decision last November. That would be the Republican Party. Remember it?

During the last 8 years the Republicans have been waving their flags and passing laws with names like the "Patriot Act." Now that they are no longer in power Republicans are openly wishing the president will fail in a time of national crisis. Republicans are talking about states seceding from the country. Where is all that patriotic talk now? Like fiscal responsibility, the Republicans have now abandoned patriotism.

The reason we are in this crisis is because for the last 8 years the Republicans were on a drunken spending binge. Now that the spending party is over, the Republicans are running out of the bar without paying their tab.

This is their crisis, they caused it, and Republicans should have to pay the price for their actions. Republicans need to take responsibility for what they did rather than heckling President Obama and the Democrats while they and the taxpayers clean up their mess.

Republican bedwetters have really outdone themselves with this one, right down to the most overused musical choice for a soundtrack: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fRmBsvWgdbE&eurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww%2Eblah3%2Ecom%2F&feature=player_embedded

In related news from yesterday:

France says it will take in an Algerian who has been held prisoner by the United States at Guantanamo Bay for the past seven years.

There you have it - the French are braver than Republicans. So give Pat Roberts back his blankie.

The devil is in the details and the details are on the table

So the gloves are off and Obama is about to square off against the Congress looking for cuts in the budget. $17B in cuts, to be exact. Guess what's at the top of the list? Of course. Medicare.

White House budget director Peter Orszag said the president's plan for program cuts is just a start and that a lot more needs to be done to dig the government out of its fiscal hole, especially curbing the growth of the Medicare and Medicaid health care programs for the elderly and the poor.

Yes, by all means. Let's load down bankers with $Billions$ and take it out of the hides of those useless bums, the old, the poor, and the children. They don't have $42M to pay lobbyists for buying Democrat votes. Bleep them.

New research shows young Americans are dramatically less likely to go to church - or to participate in any form of organized religion - than their parents and grandparents. It used to be betwen 5 and 10%, but now it's between 30 percent and 40 percent among younger Americans.

While these young "nones" may not belong to a church, they are not necessarily atheists. "Many of them are people who would otherwise be in church," Putnam said. "They have the same attitidues and values as people who are in church, but they grew up in a period in which being religious meant being politically conservative, especially on social issues."

Putnam says that in the past two decades, many young people began to view organized religion as a source of "intolerance and rigidity and doctrinaire political views," and therefore stopped going to church.

Way to go, Religious Right. Not only did you help f*** up this country by propping up a bunch of venal sociopaths and helping them win election after election, but you also helped undermine the very religion you claimed to defend by convincing an entire generation that it was made up of hateful, narrow bigots. Way to go. Well done, good and faithful servants.

Wanna silence debate? Arrest your opponents. Via Democracy Now:

On Capitol Hill, a group of doctors and activists directly challenged Democratic senators Tuesday for their refusal to discuss single-payer healthcare. The action came at a Senate Finance Committee meeting on healthcare reform. None of the fifteen witnesses called to testify support single payer, and the committee's chair, Senator Max Baucus of Montana, has dismissed single payer as "off the table." One by one, eight single-payer advocates stood up to challenge Baucus and call for single payer.

And then all eight single-payer advocates were arrested.

Now, THAT'S how you handle dissent in the Congress of a democracy, if your constituents embarrass you: Lock 'em up. That'll learn'em...

The government's long-awaited "stress-test" results have found that 10 of the nation's 19 largest banks need a total of about $75 billion in new capital to withstand losses if the recession worsened.

Yeah, and I'm gonna need some too if it keeps up.

Since abstinence programs have been shown time and again to be unsuccessful in preventing teen pregnancies, it's nice to see President Obama keeping his campaign pledge not to continue to fund them. p. 491 of his budget.

After Maine legalized same-sex marriage, Pat Robertson responded by claiming that the "ultimate conclusion" of legalizing same-sex marriage would be the legalization of polygamy, bestiality, child molestation and pedophilia. "You mark my words, this is just the beginning in a long downward slide in relation to all the things that we consider to be abhorrent," said Robertson.

You know your party has hit new lows of odiousness when even a rat-eyed tax-delinquent creep who makes propaganda videos for Pajamas Media wants nothing to do with you. So congratulations, Republicans, Joe the "Plumber" is dumping your ass.

Samuel Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, tells TIME he's so outraged by GOP overspending, he's quitting the party — and he's the bull's-eye of its target audience.

But he also said he wouldn't support any cuts in defense, Social Security, Medicare or Medicaid — which, along with debt payments, would put more than two-thirds of the budget off limits.

Jesus christ, even Joe the Plumber is a socialist now. Somebody get him a Senate Committee chair!
