Headlines - Thursday August 19

Off to California for a few days - enjoy the absence of angst!

I can tell you that the president is not concerned with his reelection. He is focused on leading the country forward.

–David Plouffe, in the forthcoming paperback version of his 2009 book "The Audacity to Win

No d'uh.

(But just as a reminder, before the 2008 election, MPS declared that whoever won would be a one-term president because the economy was not going to recover from Chimpy's Financial Disaster and that we would still be tangled in two wars. What we didn't see coming is that the Carebear wouldn't even try.)

Who needs facts when you can have misspelled e-mails?

But look, there's photo evidence!

18 percent of Americans — and 31 percent of Republicans — believe Barack Obama is a Muslim. More to the point, the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life spent good money calling a bunch of people and asking them about this, and then all of your major news outlets get to cluck and say "Ooh, this really means something or other," and everyone gets to fill time in the August news lull, so America's ignorance is a make-work program, really. Also, people who think he's a Muslim are more likely to think he's doing a bad job. There are no solid numbers on how many Americans think he's a half-breed. [Fox]

Breaking news.

The last U.S. combat troops were crossing the border into Kuwait on Thursday morning, bringing to a close the active combat phase of a 7½-year war that overthrew the dictatorial regime of Saddam Hussein, forever defined the presidency of George W. Bush and left more than 4,400 American service members and tens of thousands of Iraqis dead (actually over 1 million).

The final convoy of the Army's 4th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, based at Fort Lewis, Wash., were about to enter Kuwait shortly after 1:30 a.m. (6:30 p.m. Wednesday ET), carrying the last of the 14,000 U.S. combat forces in Iraq, said NBC's Richard Engel, who has been traveling with the brigade as it moved out this week.

"We won! We won! It's over! We brought democracy to Iraq!" a soldier shouted as fellow soldiers celebrated their arrival in Kuwait this week.

Democracy in Iraq?  Maybe.  Maybe not.  The final act to this sad episode in American history has not yet been written but for the moment the important thing to note is that American combat troops will no long be part of this immoral war.

Dr. Laura on Palin in 2008 (via):

I'm stunned – couldn't the Republican Party find one competent female with adult children to run for Vice President with McCain? I realize his advisors probably didn't want a "mature" woman, as the Democrats keep harping on his age. But really, what kind of role model is a woman whose fifth child was recently born with a serious issue, Down Syndrome, and then goes back to the job of Governor within days of the birth?

This heinous act was not committed by Muslims

A man apparently bent on destroying the police headquarters in McKinney was shot and killed this morning after spraying the building with bullets.

Police say 29-year-old Patrick Gray Sharp drove a Ford F150 pickup pulling a trailer to the station and set it on fire in an apparent attempt to draw people out of the building. Inside the trailer, police said, were wood chips, roadside flares, gasoline, and ammonium nitrate fertilizer, the type used in the bombing of the federal building in Oklahoma City.

"He had a plan. He was executing his plan," McKinney Police Chief Doug Kowalski said at an afternoon news conference at which he confirmed Sharp's identity and talked about the unusual nature of the attack.

Sharron Angle wins QOTD!

I'm sure that they probably said [that they were too conservative] about Thomas Jefferson and George Washington and Benjamin Franklin. And truly, when you look at the Constitution and our founding fathers and their writings, the things that made this country great, you might draw those conclusions: That they were conservative. They were fiscally conservative and socially conservative.

Yeah, Sharron, you self-aggrandizing nut job. The most radical free-thinkers of their generation (or of many other generations, too), who successfully waged a war against the system, a King, to create a democratic republic without a state-sponsored religion, were conservatives, just like you.

Don't they look like they are having care-free fun in their summer shorts ensems? Well, DON'T THEY?

(Hat tip: Bluegal, who suggests that they have the oversized totes to hide their shame; I think maybe they have them to climb inside as everyone laughs at the waist lines and the inevitable flat ass that the backside will have.)

Is Sarah Palin's golden touch turning into fool's gold?

ROAR

Religion/national security/energy/feminism expert @SarahPalinUSA might be losing her magical touch when it comes to stumping for the nation's Republican candidates, speculates the new peer-reviewed political science journal The Hill. Both Washington Senate candidate Clint Didier and Wyoming wannabe governor Rita Meyer just lost their primaries despite having Palin's endorsement, joining a losers' circle that includes Georgia not-gonna-be-guv Karen Handel, Kansas senatorial failure Todd Tiahrt, and a fancy lawyer lady in Tennessee named CeCe Heil who won't be a Congresslady come November. What does this mean for Palin's own campaign — which may or may not be real, like everything else about her? MORE »

Speaking of Palin...Read the comments under thos screen grab of a couple of tweets. Maybe the "lamestream media" should read them and stop treating the deeply despised - hated even - political gutterslut like her every utterance is a brilliant thesis.

Give that man a Darwin Award! "Dr. Frank Ryan, plastic surgeon to Heidi Montag and other celebrities, was sending a Twitter message about his border collie just before his fatal car accident, his ex-girlfriend tells PEOPLE. ... "He lived up in Malibu on a tiny street and he was texting while driving and he accidentally went over the cliff," Charmaine Blake says. ... Blake, a celebrity publicist, says Ryan's family was told by investigators that the Tweeting caused the wreck on Monday. ... The dog, whose name is Jill - Blake's middle name - was in the car at the time of the crash and survived injuries to the head, eye and paw."
