Headlines - Tuesday

Bush's poll numbers plummet into territory where we may need new mathmatical terms to express them

Among all Americans, only 20% approve of the way Supreme Commander George Milhouse Hoover Bush is handling his job as president and 75% disapprove.

Perfora Cariño, Perfora!

It's going to be interesting to see how much longer the vicious decades-long US embargo of Cuba lasts, whichever person wins the White House this November.

The main reason the US has stubbornly refused to trade with Cuba, and has used sanctions to bully other nations into refusing to trade with Cuba, while enthusiastically trading with and investing in China, Vietnam and other communist regimes, is that Cuba has had little to offer the US, either in terms of products or markets.

Here's a video of McCain campaign supporters turning against one of their own because he was spreading vile anti-Muslim smears. They chased him off completely, and it's a good thing to see. In the end, we're all in this thing together:

Brilliant.....

Nancy Greggs: Last-Grasped Straws

... Despite all of the current (and downright pitiable) rhetoric, the truth is that on their best day, the Republican Party could not have sired a son like Barack Obama, no less raised him to manhood.

In the midst of their hatred and bigotry, they could not have nurtured his sense of equality, nor his hunger for true justice – not for the few, but for all. In their desperate need to cling to ignorance, they could not have taught him to become a seeker of the truth, a man whose moral compass is a reality rather than a meaningless talking point to be trotted out when convenient.

In their constant quest for power and money, they could not have instilled a fervent desire for peace and understanding that transcends personal ambition, or the fleeting satisfaction of political gain.

If there are any Log Cabin Republicans out there wondering what Bible Spice's perspective is on same-sex marriage, this ought to clear it up for you:

Brody: On Constitutional marriage amendment , are, are you for something like that?

Palin: I am, in my own, state, I have voted along with the vast majority of Alaskans who had the opportunity to vote to amend our Constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman. I wish on a federal level that that's where we would go because I don't support gay marriage. I'm not going to be out there judging individuals, sitting in a seat of judgment telling what they can and can't do, should and should not do, but I certainly can express my own opinion here and take actions that I believe would be best for traditional marriage and that's casting my votes and speaking up for traditional marriage that, that instrument that it's the foundation of our society is that strong family and that's based on that traditional definition of marriage, so I do support that.

CBN has video of the interview with Palin)

How can a person say they are not going to judge others or tell them what they can or cannot do when they have judged them to be sinners and decided they shouldn't marry?

McCain counters Powell endorsement with that of a soap opera actress

No, this is not from The Onion.

As [General and former Bush Sec of State] Colin Powell's endorsement of Obama makes headlines worldwide, John McCain counters with a nod of his own an hour later, blasted out to reporters:

The McCain-Palin campaign today announced the endorsement of Mexican-American actress Katie Barberi, a
Telenovela actress currently on Telemundo's Dona Barbara.

OMG. Game over.

No doubt John McCain welcomes this guy's support, and Sarah Palin considers him one part of Pro-America America. They say patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel. I say racists posing as patriots are scoundrels.

Mr. Lundsford with his Obama effigy is merely a sign, an omen, a portent of what is to come. I wish I could believe that it will not explode into physical, and even deadly, violence, but words have consequences, and we are headed for far worse before this is over.

McCain and Palin have gone from insinuating Obama is a Muslim, a terrorist, an elitist, a crook, the antichrist and now seems to have settled - at least for a few days - on the sobriquet "socialist."

Yesterday, appropriately enough, in a hangar in Roswell, New Mexico, Palin demonstrated her great knowledge of economic theory - she must have picked up something besides clap in one of these five colleges she went to - by chirping ominously that "Senator Obama said the wants to 'spread the wealth.' What that means is he wants government to take your money and dole it out however a politician sees fit." Her adoring supporters cheered.

Pretending they weren't planning to all along, McCain's campaign manager says he is intending to play the Wright card: during the election's closing. And the reason? John Lewis made us do it!

Every negative thing out of the McCain camp is Obama's fault because he won't do a series of joint town meetings. The McCain campaign has to use vicious robocalls because it's impossible to talk to every voter individually, and the "liberal media filter" makes genuine communication through traditional channels impossible. The reason they're going to bring up Wright again? John Lewis made us do it!

This is beyond whining; it's blaming the victim. The base actually believes that the campaign is negative because Barack Obama and his supporters forced negativity on McCain, as did the "liberal media," which won't override its biases and tell the public the plain truth, which is that Obama is the most dangerous human being on the face of the earth and his presidency will be the end of civilization as we know it.

Not socialism:

Welcome to the People's Republic of Alaska, where every resident this year will get a $3,200 payout, thanks in no small measure to the efforts of Sarah Palin, the state's Republican governor. That's $22,400 for a family of seven, like Palin's. Since 1982, the Alaska Permanent Fund, which invests oil revenues from state lands, has paid out a dividend on invested oil loot to everyone who has been in the state for a year. But Palin upped the ante by joining with Democrats and some recalcitrant Republican state legislators to share in oil company windfall profits, further fattening state tax revenue and permitting an additional payout in tax funds to residents.

Socialism:

Among the more prominent elements of his tax proposal, Senator Obama would end the Bush tax cuts and allow the top two tax rates to return to 36 and 39.6 percent.

The appropriate response to any Republican who calls Obama a socialist after eight years of Bush and after listening to McCain's own proposals is outright ridicule. Laugh in their face. They have zero credibility, and the word socialism no longer has any meaning, at least not in American politics. That the Republicans still have not realized this on the very day that Ben Bernanke is on the hill advocating more spending in order to stimulate the economy is just extra precious. As a commenter noted:

Socialist: raising the top tax rate from 36% to 39%.

Free-Market: nationalizing the banks, massive investment in insurance agencies, limiting certain types of trades, raising the debt ceiling, and promoting government investment into stocks and bonds. And an emphasis on Red States.

It's all so clear now!

White pride, party wide

It's getting so a proud whites-first Republican can't get a break anywhere these days. Take Utah State Senator Chris Buttars for instance. He makes a few comments about The Black, and and all the tolerancislamunistofascists from Tremonton to Panquitch get their asses in an uproar.

One of his constituents claims to be so embarrassed by him, he or she created a web site called "save Me From My Senator." There's even a place there where you can get "Save Me From My Senator" banners.

I don't get it. Why would anyone be embarrassed if their Senator made comments like these:

This baby is black, I'll tell you. This is a dark, ugly thing.
