Headlines - Friday

"Down, down USA," the demonstrators chanted as a Ali al-Marwani, a Sadrist official, denounced the U.S. occupation of Iraq that began with the fall of Baghdad on April 9, 2003, and the toppling of Saddam Hussein's statue in Firdos Square.

While acknowledging that the recession makes the political battle more difficult, President Obama plans to begin addressing the country's immigration system this year, including looking for a path for illegal immigrants to become legal, a senior administration official said on Wednesday.

20 years ago Bill Clinton signed (but never ratified) a UN treaty - the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child. The treaty sets international standards for government obligations to children in areas that range from protection from abuse and exploitation to ensuring a child's right to free expression.

Well Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) has decided that there are no other problems facing this country right now and that the U.S. Constitution should be permanently amended to do away with that and "enshrine" in American society an inviolable set of parents' rights. The bill had 70 co-sponsors, all Republicans, including Minority Whip Eric Cantor and Minority Leader John A. Boehner.

In a vicious slur against hemorrhoids, Michael Weiner, the right-wing hate jock who works under the name Michael Savage, has attacked fellow hate jock Glenn Beck, a Mormon who is now the darling over at Fox News, by accusing Beck of stealing his material and by referring to him as a 'hemorrhoid with eyes.' Transcript via Salon.com's War Room:

Presumably Glenn Beck listens to the show every day and then copies it the next day with graphics. You have to give it to the hemorrhoid, he's not bad… The hemorrhoid with eyes has a very good pair of ears, I have to hand it to him… What's with the overacting? What's with the overemphasis of everything and the crying? What's that all about?… I'm afraid the guy's going to have a nervous breakdown on the air… This guy's on the edge everyday… Good luck to him. Personally I think the guy is going to have a crack up on the air — which is going to be very good for ratings.

Look at word clouds from both sides, now

A Wordle word cloud from the above post about Michael Wiener calling Glenn Beck a hemorrhoid with eyes.

This is just too effing cool. You go to this site and paste in your text and it creates a word cloud. You've seen those, right? But not like this, I'll bet. You can spend endless hours hitting the "randomize" button and seeing how your text displays in various themes and colors and not get tired of it. And oh yeah, you can kind of use it to check your SEO, if you're into that kind of thing.

See for yourself at Wordle.net.

Ever since it became obvious that Barack Obama had the nomination sewn up, the word "socialist" has been wielded as a cudgel by far-right ideologues to fan the flames of hysteria and whip the ignorant masses who couldn't define socialism if their lives depended on it into a frenzy.

Well, it seems that their tactic of choice has blown up in their faces most spectacularly.

Only 53% of American adults believe capitalism is better than socialism.
The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey found that 20% disagree and say socialism is better. Twenty-seven percent (27%) are not sure which is better.

Adults under 30 are essentially evenly divided: 37% prefer capitalism, 33% socialism, and 30% are undecided. Thirty-somethings are a bit more supportive of the free-enterprise approach with 49% for capitalism and 26% for socialism. Adults over 40 strongly favor capitalism, and just 13% of those older Americans believe socialism is better.

Investors by a 5-to-1 margin choose capitalism. As for those who do not invest, 40% say capitalism is better while 25% prefer socialism.

There is a partisan gap as well. Republicans - by an 11-to-1 margin - favor capitalism. Democrats are much more closely divided: Just 39% say capitalism is better while 30% prefer socialism. As for those not affiliated with either major political party, 48% say capitalism is best, and 21% opt for socialism.

Arizona State University invited President Obama to speak at their commencement, but they've notified the leader of the free world that he won't be getting an honorary degree because, well, you know, it's great that he's the first black president and everything (yes, they noted that he's black), but maybe he could come back after he finishes his term, and if he's accomplished anything significant by then, the president of the Harvard of the desert will be happy to reconsider whether the President of the United States of America has accomplished anything significant in his life.

Banks are holding foreclosed homes off the market, according to researchers who've examined foreclosure and MLS records. It is estimated that over 800,000 homes have been foreclosed upon but not placed on the market, while there are probably an equal number of homes in default which should be foreclosed upon, but banks are thus far avoiding doing so.

It appears that banks have decided that acknowledging that they loaned $800K for an $80K home on the edge of a ghetto would be embarrassing, so they just never put that home on the market. So it sits vacant, eventually squatters burn it down, and hey, then they can collect insurance!

Well, it's a theory, anyhow....

Interesting how so called "pro-life" people don't have anything to say about the lives ruined by pedophile priests. How about the latest from Ireland?

At a Thursday mass in Dublin's Pro-Cathedral, an Irish Archbishop shocked his congregation, which included numerous priests, by exclaiming that a forthcoming investigative report will reveal that over three decades, Irish Catholic priests have abused "thousands" of children.

If only they could give up the abuse for lent.

The CIA announced it would close the secret overseas prisons, where terrorists suspects were tortured. However, "in a statement to employees, the agency's director, Leon E. Panetta, said agency officers who worked in the program 'should not be investigated, let alone punished' because the Justice Department under President George W. Bush had declared their actions legal."

How about just being plain wrong?

Ted Nugent

Brave, defiant American citizens arming themselves and gathering to stop oppressors, slave drivers, tyrants, despots, punks of every stripe. Doesn't really matter who these oppressors are: we stop them all. Redcoats forcing taxation without representation or coming to take away our guns, Mexican armies or rioting gangs burning down the neighborhood. Bring it. We don't really care about the origin of evil, but we know it when we see it, and free men know in our hearts and souls that it must be halted by whatever means necessary.

Specter: Do I like Rush Limbaugh? Yeah, I like him...
Stern: He's a crackpot. He's an enemy of the country.

Specter: Uh, no, he's not. He's expressing his opinion.
Stern: He wants the president to do poorly? Listen, I never voted for Bush, but I always wanted to see him do well. I'm an American. I want my president to be successful. Who says 'I don't want my president to do well?' That's anti-American!
Specter: Well *I* haven't heard Rush Limbaugh say that.

Arlen Specter, liar and whore, on the Howard Stern radio show Link

What a pitiful liar Specter is - claiming he didn't, personally, hear Rush say it so he can't possibly comment on a fact he personally didn't witness.

Truth is, like all Republicans, Specter is afraid of Rush.

BTW, Arlen, you probably never personally heard Hitler say "Death to the Jews," so that would make Hitler merely a man who was "expressing his opinions?"
