This Week's Winner
Ohio: On trial for embezzling over $1M from his church, Pastor David Thompson said that he was authorized by God to take the money. "As the pastor and as the overseer I was mandated first and foremost from God." Thompson allegedly mortgaged church property to buy himself a Hummer, a BMW, a Ford Expedition, a Cadillac Escalade, and a boat. Thompson also used church funds to send his children to private school and add a pool to his home. Thompson faces 87 years in prison.

Oh crap

American soldiers helped Iraqi troops battle insurgents in downtown Baghdad on Sunday, repelling a major attack in the heart of the capital five days after President Obama declared an end to U.S. combat operations. [...]

"Soldiers living and working at Old MoD provided suppressive fire while IA [Iraqi army] soldiers located the two terrorists that entered the compound," he said in an e-mail. The firefight lasted "a few minutes," he said.

The U.S. military also dispatched helicopters, bomb disposal experts, unmanned aerial drones and other unspecified "intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance" assets to the scene of the downtown battle, he said, highlighting the continued dependence of the Iraqi security forces on American expertise and high-tech equipment.

Glenn Greenwald tweets:

Does this sound to you like "all American combat troops have left Iraq"?

Sigh. Politics in the Age of Madness.

Arizona governor Jan Brewer's statements earlier this summer that law enforcement officials found beheaded bodies on the Arizona-Mexico border were seemingly proven false, but when she was pressed about the comments after last week's awkward debate with democrat Terry Goddard, she completely refused to acknowledge the issue. In fact, she pretended reporters weren't even asking about the alleged beheadings, even though all of them were repeatedly asking her if she recants the comments. Finally, she gave up and stormed out of the press room, seemingly offended. Yesterday, however, she admitted to the AP, in reference to the alleged beheadings:

"I misspoke, but you know, let me be clear, I am concerned about the border region because it continues to be reported in Mexico that there's a lot of violence going on and we don't want that going into Arizona."And with that vague comment, she has decided to turn down further debates, in an effort to block her opponent from explaining why she's wrong, she explained:

"All you guys were doing and talking were beheadings, beheadings, beheadings," she said. "That is something that has stuck with you all for so long. And I just felt we needed to move on."But the governor also insisted that she ultimately made the decision to forego further debates because she did not want to provide another opportunity to Goddard, who is trailing, to get his message out.

"Why would I want to give Terry a chance to redefine himself?" she said.

Of course it is less about Terry redefining himself as it is about Brewer being concerned about voters redefining her as a senile bozo.

Love the Toni home perm on the Easter-egg yellow hair, Pastor Bill

Looks like the freaks are bringing their traveling circuses to NYC:

NEW YORK (WABC) -- Florida televangelist Bill Keller began the first service of his new 9/11 Christian church at ground zero on Sunday.

...

"If they want to go there [the 'Ground Zero' Mosque] and preach the lies of Islam, I can come and preach the truth of the bible," Keller said.

Keller spoke before roughly three dozen supporters, with support of varying degrees.

...

Like the Muslims at the Mosque, this guy has every right to preach and build his own church. Unlike the Muslims at the Mosque, this clown is nothing more than a demagogue.

It gives me faith in NYers that there are a million people who live within walking distance from this guy's 'church' and only 36 nutters showed up.

Winning hearts and minds

Hundreds of Afghans railed against the United States and called for President Barack Obama's death at a rally in the capital Monday to denounce an American church's plans to burn the Islamic holy book on 9/11.

###

Bank of America and Wachovia are following the model of the airlines in charging for everything under the Sun that once was part of being a customer of a bank.

###

The Afghan government froze the accounts of the top shareholders of the Kabul Bank.

Except for the #3 shareholder, who by a real funny coincidence just happens to be the president of Afghanistan's brother.

The bad thing is that
the CIA and our military have turned a blind eye towards corruption of Afghanistan. Even the most casual perusal of articles about the rise of the Taliban in the 1990s would have shown those two groups of fools that the twin evils of corruption and warlordism were key to the Taliban's gaining control of most of the country. It was beyond foolishness for the CIA and the military to then permit the re-establishment of a kleptocracy.

But they did and here we are. We aren't going to do anything to compel a cleanup of the Afghan government and because we won't, the Taliban will probably prevail.

Oh, and remember how the ISAF said that the operation to establish control of Marja wold be a quick one? Turns out
they were deliberately lying. ISAF, MACV, same shit, different wars.
