Headlines - Thursday September 10

NRO's Andy McCarthy is out to lunch:

According to Obama, Jones's "stunt" (a fair description) is already "a recruitment bonanza for al-Qaeda." That's absurd. No sensible person joins a terrorist organization dedicated to mass murder simply because somebody torches a Koran.

Let's imagine a Muslim burning a bible and see how many teabaggers join a mass murdering organization. These just might be the same "sensible" people who are teabaggers and voting against their best interests, perhaps.

Besides, everyone knows that sensible folks only join terror organizations only if they think the Government is going to take away their guns or raise their taxes.

What patriot doesn't try to raise money on the backs of thousands of dead Americans? Surely just a coincidence.

Turkeys=Muslins

Last night (which is last Sunday, in the Alaska time zone), Sarah Palin put up a Facebook message coming out against the burning of Korans by that nobody pastor. But wait, doesn't she usually bait her followers and their hatred of Muslins? This made many of them VERY ANGRY. How can the queen of dumb white people not want to kill all Muslims and destroy everything they hold dear? These folks have been raging in the comments. Usually, Sarah Palin has people that delete comments of Facebookers who disagree with her, but this time the torrent of hilarious, poorly spelled hatred cannot be held back. READ MORE »

Digby: Deficit Death Panel

I know the conservatives want to cut "entitlements" but literally killing off old people seems extreme even for them. But they seem to think that the elderly are being profligate spenders on health care and so they need to "take responsibility" and pay more so they won't use as much. Anyone who's been around old people and their plethora of health issues knows that's tantamount to killing them.

Wikileaks is preparing to publish a set of Iraq War documents that's three times larger than the Afghanistan leak.

Overton says that media organizations participating in the project will be making financial contributions to "help meet production costs" and that each media organization will likely come up with its own, at least partly original, take on the material because "everyone wants their exclusive."

Our noble media—the "real journalists"—are paying a source for information? I thought only the National Enquirer did that. And they're paying a source that they have tried to specifically exclude from shield laws? Hypocritical f**ks.

A chemical analysis of the bones of ancient Nubians shows that they were regularly consuming tetracycline, most likely in their beer.

The finding is the strongest evidence yet that the art of making antibiotics, which officially dates to the discovery of penicillin in 1928, was common practice nearly 2,000 years ago.

"Streptomyces produce a golden colony of bacteria, and if it was floating on a batch of beer, it must have look pretty impressive to ancient people who revered gold," Nelson theorizes.

Envying the Japanese

Paul Krugman thinks that the Japanese response to their lost decade, although weak, will be the envy of this country, largely because the Confederate party is dedicated to driving the economy further into the ditch:
It's hard to overstate how destructive the economic ideas offered earlier this week by John Boehner, the House minority leader, would be if put into practice. Basically, he proposes two things: large tax cuts for the wealthy that would increase the budget deficit while doing little to support the economy, and sharp spending cuts that would depress the economy while doing little to improve budget prospects. Fewer jobs and bigger deficits — the perfect combination.
"Vote Democratic, the Republicans Will Do Much Worse" is a pretty shitty campaign slogan. But it is what the Democrats have and they need to work it, hard.

Class of 69

Pastor burn-a-koran and

America's "Burn a Koran Day" celebrity pastor Terry Jones and pill-popping serial groom/hatemonger Rush Limbaugh are not only both graduates of Cape Girardeau Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Missouri — they graduated together, in 1969. Some people are suggesting that this means something! READ MORE »

Everybody gets along now

Crazy Pastor McMustache may have cancelled his Quran-burning party, or only "suspended" it, who knows, but that hasn't stopped our friends in Afghanistan from getting in on the fun! In the spirit of reciprocity, 10,000 or so Afghans threw stones at a German-manned NATO base, either because they have been paying very close attention and know this Terry Jones fellow got his start in Germany, or because, you know, all white people look alike. Anyway, it went better for the guys with the guns than it did for the guys with the rocks, as usual. READ MORE »

Trickle This

My thoughts exactly

As I now understand it, the budget deficit and the national debt are a huge national crisis, which threaten our future and our very way of life, if the proposal on the table is:

* Aid to the unemployed

* American infrastructure

* Jobs for teachers, firefighters, and police officers

* Retirement security

* Investment in a new U.S. energy policy

* Access to affordable health care for America's families

* Quality public schools and student loans

* Transportation, public works, research and development, childcare, and food stamps

On the other hand, the budget deficit and the national debt are utterly meaningless, and shouldn't even be considered, if the proposal on the table is:

* Tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires

* War

* Infrastructure in Iraq

* an expanded government role in health care through Medicare Part D

* an expanded government role in education through No Child Left Behind
I can only add: ... just cough up those tax cuts, and stop asking any further questions. Maybe you'll get some money from the trickle-down effect.
