December 16

Matt Taibbi's piece on Jim DeMint is well worth a read.
Scalia's son, Paul, works for crazy Catholic group that "cures" gays - Big wonder the elder Scalia is such an anti-gay nut.
Dan Savage denies breaking up Sarah Palin's son's marriage - Dan admits his "gay" marriage probably broke up "some other couple's marriage," but denies it was Track Palin's.
Borowitz: Politicians: if, as you say, this is about mental health and not guns, why are you cutting funds for mental health?
It's a shanda for the neighbors

That's how my lace-curtain Irish grandmother would reprimand us, in a loose translation of her Yiddish-speaking neighbors' shanda fur die goyim. The Newtown tragedy has disgraced America, per Evan Osnos in the New Yorker:

The children of Chengping were still filtering into the local elementary school on Friday morning, China time, when a deranged thirty-six-year-old man named Min Yingjun entered the campus. He carried a knife. (China bans private gun ownership.) By the time the security guards got to him, he had wounded twenty-two children and one adult. All survived. China, like most places, had seen this kind of madness before: one especially heavy string of school attacks in 2010 killed nearly twenty people and wounded more than fifty. The killers are as hard to recall in their particulars as they deserve.

A few hours later, on the other side of the globe, when Adam Lanza entered a primary school in Newtown, Connecticut, the particulars of his motive were unknown and, in the long run, beside the point…

It takes a lot to make China's government—beset, as it is, by corruption and opacity and the paralyzing effects of special interests—look good, by comparison, in the eyes of its people these days. But we've done it. When Chinese viewers looked at the two attacks side by side, more than a few of them concluded, as this one did that, "from the look of it, there's no difference between a 'developed' country and a 'developing' country. And there's no such thing as human rights. People are the most violent creatures on earth, and China, with its ban on guns, is doing pretty well!"

It is a strange fact that in refusing to allow rational gun policies in America, the N.R.A. and its acolytes have damaged precisely the treasure they purport to hold so dear: the moral charisma of American liberty.

Historian and ex-seminarian Garry Wills on "our Moloch":

Few crimes are more harshly forbidden in the Old Testament than sacrifice to the god Moloch (for which see Leviticus 18.21, 20.1-5). The sacrifice referred to was of living children consumed in the fires of offering to Moloch. Ever since then, worship of Moloch has been the sign of a deeply degraded culture. More »

'Meet the Press' producer Betsey Fischer Martin tweeted: "BTW, we reached out to ALL 31 pro-gun rights Sens in the new Congress to invite them to share their views on @meetthepress - NO takers."

The National Rifle Association canceled a country music event this weekend but has yet to release any statement after the school massacre.

A Mother Jones analysis of 61 mass murders over the last 30 years found that "in not a single case was the killing stopped by a civilian using a gun." As one leading expert explained, "given that civilian shooters are less likely to hit their targets than police in these circumstances," arming civilians could often lead to more chaos and deaths.

A few words on the subject of gun control:

Fuck guns and fuck every single person who utters the words "today is not the day to talk about gun control", or "guns don't kill people" or "but murders by gun have decreased in the country" or "let's not politicize this tragedy" and fuck the Michigan legislature for ramming through a bill PERMITTING guns in schools 18 hours before the deadly shooting in Newtown.

What the fuck is wrong with you people? Afraid of deadly assault by FUCKING JUICEBOX?!

And fuck the President and Congress for being goddamned pantywaists and sending out their flaks to say that now is not the time to talk about gun control while they're taking NRA money. How many more kindergartners need to die before someone says "Hey, you know what? Maybe we SHOULD be politicizing this and talking about it and ACTUALLY DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT instead of merely expressing our sympathies and getting distracted by the next shiny thing and forgetting about Aurora and Columbine and Virginia Tech and every other goddamned massacre by crazy motherfucker who was allowed to stockpile an arsenal that would make a small nation green with envy.

And guess what--the Constitution does NOT protect a mentally ill person's right to carry semi-automatic rifles into an elementary school to shoot up a classroom full of 5 year-olds because he has unresolved parental issues and should be getting mental health care instead of ammunition for his Glock. You fucking douchebags (and I'm not talking to DR readers, you know that) who think that gun control is an infringement on your Second Amendment rights need to sit huddled in those closets along with the terrified children, shitting your pants in fear that a psychopath is about to whip open the door and riddle you with bullets.

You want your guns? Fine. Then the government ought to tax the LIVING SHIT out of your ammo. Let's see how many more kids don't get to see Christmas or Kwaanza or Hannukah or Eid because you are uncomfortable with the size of your penises. Fuck you.

Fuck you.

P.S. And nobody...NOBODY...needs a goddamned AK-47 to blast the head off a deer. So fuck THAT argument as well.

The end.

UPDATE: Read this. Fucking conservative, racist gun culture.

Archie Bunker on gun control

CEDAR LAKE, Ind. (AP) — Authorities say an Indiana man who had 47 guns and ammunition in his home has been arrested after allegedly threatening to kill people at an elementary school near his home.

Cedar Lake police were called to the home of 60-year-old Von I. Meyer early Friday after he allegedly threatened to set his wife on fire. A police statement says Meyer also said he would enter Jane Ball Elementary School and "kill as many people as he could."

Authorities found 47 guns and ammunition worth over $100,000.

Why would anyone need 47 guns? This is fetishistic.

Margaret & Helen: Guns do not kill people. They just make it easier to kill people.
