Headlines - Friday June 24

Funny Somewhat Topical Ecard: Let's hope Sarah Palin applies her talent for quitting things to her presidential run.

Aw. This is so cute: the Republican women of the House had themselves a little consciousness-raising session

Gore Blasts Obama on GW Earth is burning, Obama is fiddling Link

Gore is going where few environmentalists – and fellow Democrats – have gone before:
criticizing Obma's record on global warming.

In an essay for Rolling Stone, Gore says Obama has failed to stand up for "bold action"
on global warming and has made little progress on the problem since the days of George W. Bush.
Bush infuriated environmentalists for resisting mandatory controls on the pollution blamed for
climate change, despite overwhelming scientific evidence that the burning of fossil fuels is responsible.

I think Obama's lack of action ununconscionable.

I saw a thing this week, "Ten places to visit before they're gone."
One of them is the glaciers in South America.

They have been providing fresh drinking water for South Americans since the dawn of time,
but they are 36% gone right now and they'll be 50% gone in a few years, then gone for good.

Does Obama think South Americans can live without fresh water?
When that water runs out, they'll have wars for water and someone's going to lose.

Christ, it's ONLY our planet.
Which fights does Obama think are worth fighting?

Why do Republicans hate America?

More news on the Republican effort to "undermine the Commander-in-Chief":

WASHINGTON — House Republican leaders will bring a bill to the floor as soon as Friday to defund U.S. military operations in Libya, a much stronger course of action than the non-binding resolution originally set to come up.

Just to recap, if anyone opposed the $1 trillion war in Iraq, they were branded as unpatriotic America-haters. But our limited assistance in a NATO mission is worthy of defunding.

Mitch McConnell, on the Senate side, admitted that it's only because the president is a Democrat.

"There's more of a tendency to pull together when the guy in the White House is on your side," said Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the minority leader. [...]

"A lot of our members, not having a Republican in the White House, feel more free to kind of express their reservation, which might have been somewhat muted during the previous administration," McConnell said during a breakfast sponsored by the Christian Science Monitor.

So, according to the Republican leader, patriotism in wartime is entirely dependent upon the the party in the White House? Good to know. Selective, convenient patriotism.

Just to be clear, there's nothing wrong with opposing the president. Nothing. As long as it's consistent and factual. And there's nothing wrong with patriotism, just as long as it's not kneejerk patriotism exploited for political expedience.

Herman Cain calls Jon Stewart racist for quoting stupid things he said

try to paraphrase to avoid racism

Deep dish fan Herman Cain is very offended that anybody would take some ludicrous words he said at face value, which is something only racists do. Teevee comedian Jon Stewart made fun of a weird, pointless thing Herman Cain said about how he will not allow bills longer than three pages through Congress. Cain said, "I am only going to allow small bills — three pages. You'll have time to read that one over the dinner table." Stewart made fun of this inane statement, prompting Cain to call Stewart a racist who hates black conservatives. This is how we will define racism from now on, starting today: any time you quote someone saying stupid things, you are a racist. (Everyone is racist against Sarah Palin!)  READ MORE »

Oh we've had class warfare alright. It just wasn't from the left asking for basic health care. Too bad we have a Democratic party that is too blinded by the deep pockets of Wall Street to give a damn about the real class warfare. This new report should not come as a surprise to anyone with open eyes since it's already been discussed and then completely ignored by the political class. Why do we keep voting for these people?

Ezra:

Cantor is putting personal power before country here, and in a very dangerous way. If Boehner actually does manage to cut a decent deal despite Cantor's effort to throw him under the bus, he may not hold on as leader of his party, but unlike Cantor, he'll deserve to. For better or worse, this is when we learn whether anyone on the Republican Party's leadership team is actually prepared to lead.

They got all the concessions they wanted on spending, now Kyl and Cantor have withdrawn from the process as soon as the topic shifts to taxes.

The NY Times published an Op-Ed on how the Obama Administration, the Congress and the Supreme Court has continued on with gutting the 4th Amendment.

This spring was a rough season for the Fourth Amendment. The Obama administration petitioned the Supreme Court to allow GPS tracking of vehicles without judicial permission. The Supreme Court ruled that the police could break into a house without a search warrant if, after knocking and announcing themselves, they heard what sounded like evidence being destroyed. Then it refused to see a Fourth Amendment violation where a citizen was jailed for 16 days on the false pretext that he was being held as a material witness to a crime.

In addition, Congress renewed Patriot Act provisions on enhanced surveillance powers until 2015, and the F.B.I. expanded agents' authority to comb databases, follow people and rummage through their trash even if they are not suspected of a crime.

No shit. Bloggers on both sides of the political spectrum have been warning about this for years.*

We have lost so much in this country. It was not so long ago that one never saw a policeman strutting about, wearing a German helmet and cradling a submachine gun or an assault rifle, but those are now almost common sights in some cities.

It just keeps creeping along. The Patriot Act gave powers to law enforcement to stop terrorists, but the cops were not shy about using those powers to expand garden-variety criminal investigations.

This shit has to stop. We have to stop it. We have to start electing politicians who are willing to stand up to the forces of fascism who say that they can keep us safe only if they can disregard our civil rights. We, as citizens, have to understand that when the cops abuse the rights of minorities, they are abusing everyone's rights.

But I don't see that happening. I suspect that a significant fraction of the population would cheer on the scrapping of the Bill of Rights on the tenuous promise that the forces of order will keep them safe if only the police and FBI are allowed to search when they want, arrest anyone they please and torture whenever they desire.

I do believe that the vast majority of the Founding Fathers would be appalled to see what passes for liberty and freedom in this land. But damn few people give a shit.

Crops Rotting In Georgia Since Illegal Alien Farm Workers Fled State

the good old days

WHOOPS: Georgia's legal promise to crucify any illegal immigrants it could get its hands on did, in fact, have the intended effect of scaring away the state's undocumented workers. So, lo and behold, there are no workers left to harvest all of the state's crops. Is America ready for forced labor again? Maybe this will solve the obesity epidemic? Georgia farmers are currently 11,000 workers short, and a failure to fill the ranks will cripple the state agricultural industry. Haha, there will be no food, this will solve the obesity problem, too!

The state has been trying to encourage some of the state's unemployed probationers to join chain gangs harvest crews before ALL the crops rot in the fields, but probationers have not so far worked as quickly or as hard as the space aliens do with their magical powers.

From the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:

In response, Deal proposes that farmers try to hire the 2,000 unemployed criminal probationers estimated to live in southwest Georgia. Somehow, I suspect that would not be a partnership made in heaven for either party.

As an editorial in the Valdosta Daily Times notes, "Maybe this should have been prepared for, with farmers' input. Maybe the state should have discussed the ramifications with those directly affected. Maybe the immigration issue is not as easy as 'send them home,' but is a far more complex one in that maybe Georgia needs them, relies on them, and cannot successfully support the state's No. 1 economic engine without them."

Woah woah woah hey let's not get all "this is a complicated issue" here. Space aliens are stealing jobs, remember? STEALING. [Atlanta Journal-Constitution]
