And the point of having a terrorist watch list is what, exactly?

People on the government's terrorist watch list tried to buy guns nearly 1,000 times in the last five years, and federal authorities cleared the purchases 9 times out of 10 because they had no legal way to stop them, according to a new government report.

The FDIC seized 3 more banks yesterday - bringing the total for the year to 40.

On each of those press releases, there's a figure at the bottom for the expected cost to the FDIC's Deposit Insurance Fund for taking control of and disposing of the bank (selling it to another institution, shutting it down completely, or selling part of it and shutting down the rest). The seizure of these 40 banks, by the FDIC's estimation, will cost them more $11 billion once everything has been processed.

Sometimes it is really instructive to look at how a non-violent movement can change the course of war. These women studied Ghandi and MLK and then using their lessons, were able to end the chaos and madness of war. Awesome.

From Tom Hilton:

the people who (claim to) have the greatest faith in what Obama's endorsement would do for the Iranian opposition would be the last to admit that before the election, the opposition was newly energized by Obama's speech in Cairo. The things Obama actually does have no value; it's only the things he doesn't do that could transform the world.

Somebody learned something at Liberty University!

This is big news, a first in the history of that institution! The student who led the LU College Democrats, the student club that was shut down by the administration because apparently, anything other than Republican Wingnuttia is the antithesis of the conservative Christian ideals they hope to promote, has written a letter describing the important lessons he learned at Liberty.

That lesson, of course, is to get the hell out and go to a different university.

Give them time, and with a little hard work, maybe the rest of the student body there can master that important skill, too.

Bill O'Reilly complained about the media ignoring the story of a soldiers murder, but ignored the story of the arrest of Shawna Ford and her Minuteman cohorts for the cold-blooded murder of a 9 year old girl and her father.

The Texas state supreme court ruled unanimously on Friday that a town which had altered its zoning to ban two church-sponsored halfway houses in a residential neighborhood was in violation of the Texas Religious Freedom Restoration Act.

That act, which was passed in 1999 and endorsed by then-Governor George W. Bush, affords greater legal protection to religious operations than to equivalent secular operations.
